 What's New for the 2017 Subaru Crosstrek?

For the first few generations that Subaru produced the Impreza, it offered an off-road appearance package for the compact car. Then when the fourth production cycle began in 2011, the Japanese automaker spun off the appearance package as a standalone vehicle named the Crosstrek in the North American market. The 2017 model year premiered at the 2016 New York International Auto Show, thereby kicking off the Crosstrek’s second generation of production (and the Impreza’s fifth).

Like all other Subaru vehicles, the 2017 Crosstrek has all-wheel drive as its standard drivetrain. The compact five-door hatchback consists of a regular model, the mid-tier Premium, and the top-level Limited. The new Crosstrek gets its power from the 2.0-liter horizontally opposed 4-cylinder Subaru Boxer engine, which puts out 148 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque. The regular and Premium models have their engines tied to a 6-speed manual transmission. The Limited goes with a continuously variable transmission, which provides smoother driving and better fuel economy (26/33 mpg instead of 23/30 mpg), since it does not use the gear shifting mechanism of traditional transmissions. As a five-seater, the 2017 Subaru Crosstrek provides 97.5 cubic feet of passenger volume; it decreases to 94 cubic feet if you add the moonroof on the Premium or Limited. Cargo volume is measured at 22.3 cubic feet at the trunk, and that can be expanded into the cabin by folding down the rear seatback. If you want to be able to heat either of the front seats during the colder months, go with the Premium or Limited; the latter is additionally furnished with leather upholstery instead of cloth. Amenities on the 2017 Crosstrek start with features such as steering wheel-mounted controls, a rear vision camera, Bluetooth connectivity, and a four-speaker STARLINK multimedia system that includes HD Radio, a single-disc CD player, AM/FM radio, and a 6.2-inch high-resolution LCD touchscreen display. The Premium and Limited models get six speakers on their stereo systems instead of four; and the Limited in particular gets additional paddle shifters for simulating manual gear shifting, voice-activated controls with Siri Eyes Free, an automatic climate control system, and SiriusXM satellite radio and Travel Link subscriptions. For safety in the event of a car crash, Subaru equips the Crosstrek with dual front impact airbags, a driver’s knee airbag, dual front seat-mounted side impact airbags, and a pair of side curtain airbags. Also standard are vehicle dynamics control, traction control, anti-lock braking, and braking assist. For security, the Crosstrek combines remote keyless entry and an engine immobilizer. The Limited has a few extras, such as blind spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert, and a STARLINK Safety and Security suite of services that includes automatic collision notification, roadside assistance, and stolen vehicle recovery.
