Do you need a crossover vehicle that’s versatile and practical in a way only a Subaru can be? The Subaru Ascent, introduced in 2019, is a multipurpose crossover that has plenty of seating, features, and capabilities. At Bob Wade Subaru, it’s often asked what the differences are between current and previously released models of a Subaru. Usually, it’s a matter of updates and tweaks that are designed to improve the usability of the vehicle. So, here’s a quick rundown of the major differences in performance, appearance, and features between the 2020 and 2021 version of the Subaru Ascent.

Performance

Performance is unchanged in the latest model of the Ascent. The ample power and efficiency of the Ascent’s 2.4-liter turbocharged, four-cylinder engine was deemed optimal, and that there wasn’t any need for improvement. Some minor tweaks to the transmission and electrical system improve reliability. Both versions also feature a continuously variable transmission, anti-lock brakes, and power steering.

Appearance

There’s only one major difference to the external features of the 2021 Subaru Ascent. The newest model features steering-responsive LED lights that better illuminate the direction of travel. Other than this, the profile, styling, and external features have remained essentially the same. These include a liftgate spoiler and roof rails for roof mounts and equipment, which are married to chrome accents, angled surfaces, and muscular lines that give the Ascent a modern and imposing presence on the road.

Features

For 2021, features such as lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and belt reminders for back seats have become standard on the Ascent at all trim levels. Other features that are optional for 2020 and 2021 include wireless internet connectivity, heated seats, a rear parking camera, Android Auto, a 6.5-inch display screen, a tri-zone climate control system, and Apple CarPlay.
