The Subaru Outback has a somewhat complicated history that originates in 1994. The Subaru Outback designation belongs to two different Subaru models, the Subaru Legacy and Subaru Impreza. The Subaru Legacy Outback and Subaru Impreza Outback Sport both began production in 1994, but production for the Subaru Impreza Outback ceased in 2011 during its third generation. The Subaru Outback now exists only as a Subaru Legacy-based model and is now in its sixth generation of vehicles.

The Toyota RAV4 made history in 1994 as the first-ever compact crossover SUV. Initially produced only for the Japanese and European automotive markets, the Toyota RAV4 was introduced to the automotive market of the United States in 1995. Since its appearance in the American SUV market, the RAV4 has undergone a series of changes. The RAV4 is now in its fifth generation of models.

The Subaru Outback and Toyota RAV4 are two of the best selling crossover vehicles and for a good reason. The 2020 Subaru Outback and 2020 Toyota RAV4 are slightly similar to one another with a few key differences. Both crossovers are highly capable and have a lot of features to offer their drivers. While the 2020 Toyota RAV4 is a great vehicle, the 2020 Subaru Outback defeats it in several categories.

Performance

The 2020 Subaru Outback outshines the 2020 Toyota RAV4 in production. Two new engine layouts power the 2020 Subaru Outback. The base engine layout for the 2020 Outback is a 2.5-liter flat-four engine that produces 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. The new and more powerful turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four engine is offered as an optional engine for the Outback. The turbocharged 2.4-liter engine produces 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. Both engines are paired to a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that offers a manual shifting mode.

The 2020 Toyota RAV4 is expected to use the same engine layouts that were available on the 2019 Toyota RAV4. The first of these engine layouts is a 2.5-liter I4 engine that produces 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The second engine will be an optional hybrid I4 engine that produces 219 horsepower to an all-wheel-drive drivetrain. The 2.5-liter engine will be mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission while the hybrid engine will utilize a continuously variable transmission.

Interior

The 2020 Subaru Outback features 30 cubic feet of cargo space while the 2020 Toyota RAV4 has 35 cubic feet of cargo space. However, much of the available space in the Toyota RAV4 is not readily usable due to the crossover's design. The 2020 Subaru Outback is capable of seating five adults comfortably while the RAV4 struggles to fit taller occupants as a result of its design.

Features

The 2020 Subaru Outback Premium is fitted with an extensive 11.6-inch touchscreen display that allows access to the Outback's infotainment system; twin 7.0-inch touchscreens are included standard in every Outback. The infotainment system is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Additionally, occupants of the 2020 Outback can connect devices through two USB charge ports.
