Although both of these vehicles have quite a bit to offer, a close examination reveals that the Outback outperforms the Passport in a few key ways.
Fuel Economy
Gas mileage is one of the most important things for consumers today. In this category, the Outback comes out ahead. This is thanks, in part, to the standard continuously variable transmission. Having a CVT tends to boost fuel economy when compared to a more traditional option, like the standard nine-speed automatic transmission that the Passport has.
So how much better are the numbers for the Outback? It has an EPA estimate of 23 MPG in the city and 30 MPG on the highway. The Passport, on the other hand, is only estimated to get 19 MPG in the city and 24 MPG on the highway. Although the Passport has a slightly larger gas tank, it still has a much shorter range between fill-ups.
Off-Road Capability
