 What's New for the 2017 Subaru WRX?

The turbocharged, performance-enhanced version of Subaru's compact vehicle, the Impreza, the WRX was eventually spun off as a standalone car. For the 2017 model year, which coincidentally kicked off the Impreza's fifth generation of production, the WRX comes with the addition of a reverse automatic braking system as part of the available EyeSight Driver Assist package. Otherwise, the WRX remains virtually unchanged. The 2017 Subaru WRX is available in five trims: WRX, Premium, Limited, STI, and STI Limited.

Like all other Subaru vehicles, the WRX has standard all-wheel drive. The base-level engine is the twin-scroll turbocharged 2.0-liter Subaru Boxer 4-cylinder engine with 268 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. At the STI trim level, though, the engine is upgraded to a turbocharged 2.5-liter Subaru Boxer that generates 305 horsepower and 290 lb-ft of torque. Each engine is paired with a 6-speed manual transmission, with hill start assist added on the STI and STI Limited. Inside the vehicle is 96.6 cubic feet of passenger volume on the regular WRX and STI trims; the others have 3.5 less cubic feet because of the added power tilt-and-slide moonroof. Trunk space is measured at 12 cubic feet, although you can bend down the 60/40 split-folding rear seatback to expand cargo space. Front-seat heating capability appear on the Premium trim and above, the Limited trim level (i.e., Limited and STI Limited) gets 8-way power adjustability on the driver's seat, and the WRX Limited and above is upgraded with leather upholstery. (The STI stands apart with an alcantara-and-leather combination.) For comfort and convenience, the 2017 Subaru WRX starts off with electronic cruise control, HD Radio, remote keyless entry, Bluetooth connectivity for audio streaming and hands-free phone operation, and a six-speaker stereo system with a 6.2-inch color touchscreen display. On the Limited and higher, Subaru switches the 6.2-inch screen with a 7-inch one, and the STI trim level gets dual-zone automatic climate control. The top-level STI Limited stands apart with a nine-speaker 440-watt Harman Kardon sound system, 7-inch touchscreen navigation, keyless access, and push-button engine start. Safety features include electronic vehicle stability, traction control, a four-wheel anti-lock disc brake system that includes ventilated front brakes, a rear vision camera, brake assist, a brake override system, and an airbag system that includes a knee bolster airbag at the driver's side. Go with the Premium trim or above to get a suite of STARLINK safety and security services like automatic collision notification, roadside assistance, stolen vehicle recovery, and SOS emergency assistance. The STI trim level overhauls the disc brakes with a Brembo performance braking system that includes ventilated front and rear discs, and the STI Limited has the addition of blind spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert.
